When I first came across Ex Libris I took the time to contact them through their website. I received a lengthy, detailed description of how these books are rescued from being dumped into oblivion...LITERALLY! I learned about a "dark" part of books' lives I didn't know even existed. (Not everyone respects them as I do) That Jacob cared enough about my question of his product sourcing to reply, in such detail, impressed me. I now rest assured that, indeed, Jacob's integrity, alone, make these journals, a quality product worth my support! He's doing it right in Portland!

That is a bit bizarre. If I hadn't known any better, I'd have assumed you collaged it. I never had cool notebooks like that though, but I'm certainly trying to make up for it now.:)

I have a hybrid system - some thematic (work/volunteer), some location (car/bag/home/lab)... As a "lister" I capture action items/reminders and eventually cross them off; or I translate into Evernote if the notes skew toward intel and ideas. Meeting notes tend to go on a 5x8 Doane Paper pad, then translated same as above (and pages recycled). Field Notes are my preferred vehicle - I have given them to each of my team mates, including students who work in our lab - they are the perfect size for jotting and fit in scrub pockets and jeans pockets. I have a Moleskine for "big ideas" and sprawling, random journal-type entries on trips and such.

I just got mine!! It was so hard to find. Most stores I checked were sold out of the regular size in brown :( Finally got it at resor shop. I saw it on Amazon but the refills were couple of bucks more expensive.

This is a very good resource for all the scribblers and doodlers :)

Recently I designed a sketchbook for children, something they can jot their ideas in, kids are so creative, especially the preschoolers :)

My son loves to carry it wherever he goes, and he is only about 6!! Do stop by and have a look!! http://www.littlesketchers.com

Thanks!

Wow! I never actually thought that you'd feature me here, Nifty! Thank you so much! The collection has grown exponentially, though still as colourful as ever. If anyone would like to check out my stationery blog (which is still in its infancy, I'm afraid), please don't hesitate to do so.

I struggled with this for awhile. Had so many notebooks and would bounce around too much, never finishing any of them. Then I decided to use ONE planner & ONE notebook. After a yr I got in the habit of using & finishing both.

Now I feel confident enough to use multiple notebooks. Currently in use:
1 daily planner (Moleskine)

1 permanent notebook for notes on writing & other stuff

2 catch all "scribble" books. I leave one at home, carry the other. If the content is worth keeping, I transcribe to the permanent book. These are super cheap, not well made ones I picked up at thrift stores for a dollar or 2. I'm going to throw these out when filled. I'm finding a lot of what I write is mind jibberish that loses its meaning over time so no need to keep the info. And I need the space!

1 notebook for knitting/crochet/sewing/art projects, used maybe once a week.

1 thin notebook to list books read, used maybe once a week.

Comment on Review: Pentalic Illustrator’s Sketchbook by Filcard

I like the Pentalic Illustrator's Sketchbook pretty well. It has a nice clean feel to it. I think they also went through a couple formulations when they first developed it. I know the first round was pretty thin paper, and then they beefed it up a bit. Reason I know is because I ended up with one of the first ones, bought another one later on, and it was thicker paper the second time around. Not sure which one you reviewed here.

My absolute favorite though is the "sister" product to the Illustrator, the Traveler Pocket Sketch. Instead of hard covers, they have a flexible cover, still waterproof and durable. I like the flex a bit better because it allows the book to open a tiny bit easier when I'm drawing or writing on the go. I use them primarily for journals. I write with tons of different pens. I'm a pen and ink freak. Usually I use Daler Rowney FW ink or Dr. Ph Martin's Bombay india ink... both are dip inks, so I use a pen holder and various pen nibs. No ink other than yucky Sharpies (not a fan) bleed through the Traveler pages. The paper is great for ink, pencil and colored pencil. The Traveler sheets are considerably beefier than the Illustrator, at a 60# weight. I absolutely love these books and have filled a number of them.

I'm currently writing in an Illustrator, that's why I found your blog interesting. The one I'm using right now is the white covered one, and it's pages are pretty thick, so it must be the second run. If you can find one of those, I bet you'll like it more based on your review of show through.

Here's a link to the Travelers on Amazon, available in a range of sizes and colors:
