Simple Handmade Books at Brooklyn Brainery

Have you ever wanted to make your own hand-bound notebook but weren’t quite sure how? There are people out there who will teach you: Simple Handmade Books at Brooklyn Brainery:

Inspired by our recent bookbinding class, we’ve been making lots and lots of notebooks lately. So for this month’s Sunday party, we’ll show you the basics of making some cool little handsewn notebooks from a few materials you probably already have laying around the house–scrap paper, needles, and thread. You’ll never need to buy a birthday present again.

We’ll have lots of paper, needles, and thread on hand, but feel free to bring any especially awesome paper you’d like to turn into a notebook, and keep an eye out for a full session of bookbinding again in June!

The class was last held on May 22nd, and was fully booked– no wonder, as the fee was only $5! Let’s hope they have another one soon… Of course, not everyone lives in Brooklyn, but I’m sure there are a lot of other bookbinding workshops that do similar classes in other cities. If you know of one, please post it in the comments!

  1. Very cool! The only training source I found in my area (Seattle) was so expensive (and involved a 12-week class! a little overkill) that it’d probably be cheaper for me to fly to NY for this…hmm…I have relatives in the area I could stay with. Hmm…

Those are very nice looking notebooks and I’d love to learn how to do that!

  2. There are some serious book binding workshops here in San Francisco. It usually runs for half a day and are pretty costly, even for beginning class.

  3. What I’d really like to know is where to obtain lined (ruled) paper for binding notebooks like these.
