Starbucks Planners

A while back, I got this tip from a reader named Dom:
I’m not sure if Notebook Stories ever covered this before, but here in the Philippines (and other Asian countries I believe) Starbucks does a special promotion every Christmas season where they release a limited-edition Starbucks planner. It is so popular here that it has its own minor cult following.
This was an article a local financial writer did a couple years ago about the phenomenon: http://fitzvillafuerte.com/pinoys-spend-much-get-starbucks-planner-theyll-never-use-anyway.html
This was last year’s planner, which was a collaboration with Moleskine: http://rodmagaru.com/2015/10/2016-philippines-starbucks-planner-moleskine-stickers/ (I believe Singapore is releasing the Starbucks Moleskine too this year)
And this is the newest edition of the planner available right now: http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/241694/your-2017-starbucks-planner-in-cool-print-and-color/
I’ll admit I don’t really use the Starbucks planner myself, but I thought you’d be interested in what a minor cultural phenomenon it’s mutated into here. Even other coffee shops have started doing their own versions of the holiday planner promotion!
I was vaguely aware of these planners from seeing them listed for sale on eBay, but had no idea it was part of such a fad!
Here are some images of various planners from the last few years, via The Peach Kitchen:
It’s a fun idea for a promotion. I don’t tend to go to Starbucks and I never order anything fancier than a skim latte, but I’d probably be one of these suckers who changes her coffee habits just to get a free planner, assuming it was a nice pocket-size planner.
Thanks to Dom for sending the tip!

  1. We had a Starbucks planner here in New Zealand one year, back in the early 2000s. You had to get 12 stamps for their seasonal Christmas drinks to earn one. I wish I’d kept mine.

  2. In addition to the Roastery Edition Kate mentioned above, there have been two subsequent editions also featured at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery:

    – one called Coffee Origins featuring regional coffee maps and facts: http://fieldnotescolors.com/2015/09/03/field-notes-starbucks-reserve-coffee-origins-preview-giveaway/
    – one called Capitol Hill based on the area of Seattle where the Roastery is located: http://www.threestaples.com/blog/field-notes-starbucks-capitol-hill

I also noticed they were carrying a brand of larger notebooks at all/most Starbucks during the recent holiday season as part of their gift collection, but don’t recall the name of the brand.

  3. The pity is, if you don’t live in Seattle, you have to buy these on eBay. Starbucks had a Moleskine coffee collaboration a few years back and sold it online.

I’d like to see those planners in the US, but I won’t hold my breath for it.
