Uniqlo’s Notebook Rule

Check out this quote from an article in New York Magazine about the Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo and their SoHo store:

This morning, 30 “advisers” as Uniqlo calls its employees who help customers stand at the bottom of the stairs leading to the lower floor, with notebooks open and pens poised. Each is instructed to carry a notebook at all times, and to write down everything any manager tells them.

Unfortunately, it’s part of their management philosophy of requiring robotic obedience, not an encouragement to be organized or think creatively:

There is a poster in every Uniqlo manager’s office outlining the “Ten Accountabilities.” No. 8 reads, “As a store manager, always follow company direction. Do not work in your own way.”

Oh well… I wonder if they’re required to use a specific kind of notebook? The article doesn’t say…
