Notebook Addict of the Week: Strikethru

This week’s notebook addict is Strikethru.

For reasons I don’t understand, some of my notebooks are at least half used, while others have only a sullied page or two, and still others are completely blank. When I look back over my skritchings, one thing is clear– since college, I have rarely used a notebook for anything other than cryptic notes, rambles and weird little margin drawings.

You can see some of those margin drawings in her post. But here’s her stash:

Not bad for someone whose first love is typewriters!

The First Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper

Welcome to the first edition of the Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper!

Some carnivals have roller coasters, fried dough, and oversized stuffed animals as prizes. This carnival offers just as much fun and variety, if you love handmade Japanese paper, fountain pens, Filofaxes, and 15-year old spiral notebooks. Every month, a different blog will host this traveling collection of the best posts about pens, pencils, notebooks, and other related topics. (More information here and here.)

I’m so excited to be launching the Carnival with such a great collection of posts. The submissions were everything I’d hoped for: a wide range of topics from a variety of blogs, some that I knew well and some new ones I’ve just discovered. It was hard to select a few favorites to highlight as Editor’s Picks, so I chose a few from the blogs that were new to me.

Editor’s Picks:

archer notebooks

Clement Dionglay presents I Love Notebooks posted at Rants of the Archer.
Nifty says: If this hadn’t been in the carnival, I definitely would have made it an “Addict of the Week” post!

highlighters

Kim presents Head to Head Highlighters posted at Prosaic Paradise.
Nifty says: you don’t see too many side-by-side highlighter comparisons–especially not ones that conclude that they’ve found the holy grail of highlighters!

blackwing pencil

Blackwing 602 pencil presented by pencil talk, who says, “a pencil review, in fact :-)”
Nifty says: wow, there is an incredible amount of detail and history in this review of a no-longer-made pencil with an unusual design. Great photos too.

dar minutes

Monda presents Reading the Minutes posted at Fresh Ribbon, saying, “Sometimes old notebooks have secrets…”
Nifty says: I love it when notebooks can capture bits of history like this.

Now on to the rest of our carnival, organized by topic.

Pen Reviews

Nrepose presents Zebra Clip On Multi posted at Unposted.

Okami0731 presents Featured Pen – Retro 51 Cioppino posted at Whatever.

dowdyism presents Review: Zebra F-701 posted at The Pen Addict, saying, “The Zebra F-701 is a pen that has been around for a while, but it is new to me, and many other readers as well.”

Kew L. Ang presents Lamy Safari posted at My So Called Life, saying, “Lamy Safari is an entry level fountain pen and it is also the cheapest from this German Company. The pen has a black chromium plated steel tip and the body was made of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic. In the middle of the body, there is a little window displaying the ink level and the pen cover has a gigantic clip. At first glance, it is young, chic and colorful. The pen screams our practicality rather than something that look nice on your pocket. The pen comes in Blue, Black, Red, Yellow, Orange and recently in bright Pink as a special edition.”

Margana presents Time for a Purple Fix posted at An Inkophile’s Blog, saying, “Inkophile is about fountain pens, ink, and the paper that suits them best.”

John Hartzog presents Tommy And The Platinum Pro-Use 03 MSD-1000A posted at Pens And Pencils, a drafting pencil review.

In my post about it, I also mention Jefferson’s ivory notebook and provide a link to the history of Jefferson’s involvement in the development of the modern fountain pen.”

Steve presents Filofax – My Own Story posted at Steve Morton.

Jackie Flaherty presents Pens & Notebooks posted at Letters & Journals, saying, “I am one of those people who collects notebooks and pens unabashedly. I don’t even need a reason to write…just a fine tip pen and smooth writing paper.”

Poem: Two Pens, One Book

I stumbled across this poem at Transformation by Dialectic and just loved it.

Two Pens, One Book

(for the wedding of my firstborn)

A blank book begins on a pedestal.
Knock it off.
Spill some ink
deliberately.
Life is gloriously messy,
let it know that you are
participating!
Let it know that you have both shown up
and that your team
will make its mark
immediately.

You may not always write big and bold –
but do so now!
Claim this joint territory with
some reckless abandon
while you may,
so that your children will honor you,
and learn that real authority derives from truth,
and never vice versa.

What a wonderful metaphor, but also something that can be taken quite literally by notebook lovers. Don’t be afraid to make that first mark in your journal– don’t worry about it being perfect, get in there and mess it up!

Please visit Transformation by Dialectic to read other poems by the author.

EBay Find: Rice-Stix

Every once in a while, I have a little burst of temporary insanity, and I decide to go browsing on EBay. Fortunately, some of these bursts lead to interesting and inexpensive notebook finds! Here’s a real gem:
ricestix1
This notebook must have been given out as a promotional item by a company called Rice-Stix, based in St. Louis. It was apparently some kind of big wholesale distributor, representing a wide variety of products. ricestix2

The notebook has a picture of the company headquarters, as well as information about the products they carried, and even an index as to where you’d find them in their showroom. And the best part: a floor-by-floor thumb index, so you could keep your shopping list organized!

No one ever seems to have written in it. I’m not planning to write in it either– I’ll probably just put it on a shelf and admire it once in a while!

Alwych Notebooks $6.99 at Amazon

alwych notebook

Anyone who read Black Cover’s glowing review of the Alwych book surely wanted one–but they were only available by ordering from the UK, which was daunting. But now they’re available at Amazon for only $6.99 plus shipping for the pocket size version– WAY cheaper than ordering from the UK. Other sizes are available too– see all here.

Keep a Weight-Loss Journal

Just one more reason to love notebooks: they can help you lose weight! Lots of people (myself included) use notebooks to record their food intake and exercise. But here’s another suggestion I hadn’t heard of:

Compliment Journal: This is more than just about compliments, but use it as a starting point. Write down inspiring quotes that motivate you. When others compliment you on non-fitness related issues. And when others take notice of all the hard work you have done. When you feel you’re not making progress, just go back and read through all your great comments and quotes and feel motivated again.

Renegade Craft Fair Finds

The blogger at Dig Under Rocks recently attended the Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles. She found a few vendors of interesting paper products including these notebooks:

Next I came upon a shop, Tyler Bender Book Co., with a really unique and interesting idea.. Vintage and recycled notebooks. Covers were made from old t-shirts, cereal boxes, old book covers, wallpaper, anything interesting in design or texture.. inside pages were old blank spiral notebook pages neatly bound. All books are hand bound by artist Tyler Bender based here in LA. He also has a booth at the Silver Lake Craft and Vintage Fair on Saturdays.

Now I want to go to L.A. and check these out! Read more at Dig Under Rocks.

Notebook Addict of the Week: The Girl in the Cafe

Wow. Here’s someone who must really like to stock up and save when she finds a notebook she likes!

colorful notebooks

Here’s her thoughts on the matter:

I like notebooks. I buy them as souvenirs in places I visit: the two ones with hearts on it are both bought in New York for example. Or if they have really funky colours I will be tempted. Or when the paper has nice patterns on it.

My problem is that I have turned into a serious notebook addict and during packing I found …
ehrm, 29 empty notebooks! (Number 29, a Wall-E notebook was already packed so is not shown on the photo).

From The Girl in the Cafe.

Notebooks, journals, sketchbooks, diaries: in search of the perfect page…
